Craniosacral Therapy

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

CranioSacral Therapy was developed in the 1930s by the osteopath William Garner Sutherland. It is a therapeutic technique used to facilitate the body’s natural healing mechanism by regulating the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and balancing the bones and membranes of the cranium and the neural system. All healthy, living tissues express life through subtle rhythmic impulses. These tide-like motions initially arise at the core of the body and involve the brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, connective tissues and bones.

WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY USED FOR?

CranioSacral Therapy can treat dysfunctions within the cranial system, which might include traumatic injuries, headaches, TMJ, and spinal issues, among others. The body’s tissues contract in response to physical traumas or emotional stress. Sometimes, when the shock is severe or occurs within an emotional situation, the tissues stay contracted. Any stresses, strains, tensions or trauma which have been “stored” in the body in this way will restrict the body’s functioning and may give rise to problems over the years. CranioSacral Therapy can help address these problems by balancing the CranioSacral system.

How Does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

The therapist uses a gentle touch to feel the internal rhythmic impulses of the patient. When these impulses are irregular or blocked, the therapist feels this subtle lack of motion in the body and can use it to identify areas where there is congestion or restriction.

Based on your specific needs, CranioSacral Therapy might be the focus of your treatment or just one element in your holistic treatment plan. It is appropriate as a treatment method for all ages.
